Construction emission database CO2data.fi

co2data.fi Rakentaminen

The CO2data.fi online service offers objective information on the climate impact of construction products and processes utilized in Finland. This data harmonizes the assessment of greenhouse gas emissions across the entire lifecycle of buildings, simplifying the design of low-carbon solutions. Moreover, these calculations enable setting specific numerical objectives. The emissions database constitutes an integral component of the CO2data service.

Emission data for construction products, processes and services

The emissions database for construction provides information on a building's carbon footprint, carbon handprint, material content, material efficiency, and recyclability. At the heart of the service is information on the climate impacts of construction products, end-of-life recycling and recovery options, the amount of waste generated on construction sites, and the technical life of frequently replaced products. In addition, the database contains emission data for the most common construction processes and services, such as transportation, construction and waste management.

The database contains average data for the most common and typical building products primarily sourced from public databases such as environmental product declarations. Experts from the construction industry played an active role in this development. The service does not cover specific commercial products. The continuously updated database includes currently hundreds of items.

The database serves professionals in the construction sector

The emissions database for construction primarily serves professionals in the construction industry such as designers, product manufacturers, and construction companies. However, the information is also valuable for researchers and others interested in the climate impacts of construction. The emission database has already been integrated into numerous calculation tools. Collaboration with professionals in the construction industry has been intensive since the development phase of the service, even before its release in 2021. The service is free for all users.

The Construction Act guides towards low-carbon construction

With the new Construction Act, it is now mandatory to conduct a climate survey and a material survey for buildings. The Emissions Database for Construction enables the preparation of these surveys in a comparable manner. Information is regularly updated to reflect evolving data and changes in the operating environment as products and services continually develop.

The Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE), commissioned by the Ministry of the Environment, is responsible for the maintenance and development of the Emissions Database for Construction. This database is part of the CO2 Data Service, which also includes an emissions database for infrastructure construction.
